Management & Media Academy (MMA)

MMA - de Management en Media Academy is een zelfstandige stichting die nauw samenwerkt met Free Voice.

Who we are and what we stand for

MMA’s mission is to support independent media in countries that have recently recovered from oppression and conflict. We believe that journalists who keep to high professional and ethical standards are key role players in democratic processes and the freedom of information. Our activities therefore contribute to raising professional skills of all media workers and media organizations thus enhancing the credibility of media in their societies.

Our history

MMA was founded in 1994 by a group of leading journalists, media managers, and teachers of journalism from the Netherlands as well as the United Kingdom as a non-profit organization based in the Netherlands. In 2003 MMA has become a partner of Free Voice a Dutch NGO supporting independent media worldwide. Cooperation with Free Voice meant expanding our expertise and geographical scope. MMA shares the housing and logistic staff of Free Voice in Hilversum, The Netherlands. Since the 15 years of its existence MMA has contributed to professionalization of independent media   in many countries of Central and Southeast Europe, the republics of the former Soviet Union and in the Middle East and North Africa. Our experience and the lessons we have learned are available through our publications: ‘Best practices for regional media’ and ‘A manual for creating a Style Guide’.

How we work

Our core business is capacity building for media workers and media organisations. In close cooperation and constant dialogue with partners and media experts in the Netherlands as well as abroad, MMA develops training projects that run from two to three years, combining a series of closely linked activities.

For funding of our projects we apply to national and international donors.

The Matra program of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in the Netherlands has funded most of our projects in countries on their way to membership of the European Union and the neighbouring region.

Our partners

MMA conducts its training activities in cooperation with independent civil or educational organisations that are closely connected with local media. Their expertise safeguards a local perspective in all our activities. In the Netherlands we have established partnerships with Fontys Hogeschool and Wegener Publishing Company who contribute their theoretical and practical expertise.
